Lombok Island Indonesia - Destination Info

Exploring Lombok makes you feel like in a dream: endless white sandy beaches, green hills and slopes, dramatic coastlines, large coconut trees, crystal blue waters, colourful sailing boats on the horizon and a sunset behind Bali’s volcano Agung that takes your breath away.

Lombok’s attractions range from an unspoilt nature, pristine beaches, friendliness of the local people, the unique culture of the sasak and several outdoor activities from hiking and golfing to diving and surfing.

What makes Lombok the "better Bali"

Lombok lies just 30 minutes by plane East of Bali. The size of both islands are similar, whereas they are separated in their flora and fauna through the Wallace line. Lombok is greener than Bali and can be still described as a relatively undeveloped and unspoilt island. Due to its tranquillity and authenticity, Lombok appears to be still a virgin and in some regions untouched island.

We have the saying here that "in Lombok you can see Bali but in Bali you can’t see Lombok". This comes from the several Balinese people that brought their culture and traditions to Lombok although the Sasak people from Lombok always kept their culture and traditions on the island. From Lombok you can also see Bali’s volcanoes that create a scenic picture with the sun going down behind.

The most dramatic coastline road awaits you in Lombok

The small road leading from Senggigi on the west coast to Bangsal in the north, is one of the most beautiful coastline drives. The magnificent coast hemmed by white sand beaches, stunningly beautiful cliffs and by plantations of coconut palms is arranging unforgettable viewpoints on the three Gili islands.

All around the coastline, the beaches are exceptionally clean, with unpolluted waters bordered by large stretches of sand, usually fringed with coconut palms. Drive around and you can be assured of your own personal deserted beach.

The second highest volcano of Indonesia is calling you

Ready for the ultimate thrill? Accept the challenge and hike Indonesia’s second highest volcano. The Rinjani volcano is unique with its lake inside the crater that hosts another smaller active volcano inside. The view to the Gili islands, Bali and Sumbawa and the fascinating surroundings from rice fields and jungle to rocks, make this trekking a memorable one.

The first glimpse on the volcanos when reaching the crater will stay in your memories for a long time. Hiking to the mount Rinjani takes around 2 days to the top and one day down. The trekking season lasts from April to September and different routes and options can be chosen according to your fitness and time schedule. We advise to do the trekking before diving.

Never heard about the Sasak before?

Then you definitely never met the friendly people of Lombok. Their traditional way of living can be observed in Segenter and Sage village. If you wish to see their traditional weaving and pottery, head to Sukara and Banyumulek village. Mostly on Sundays, weddings are taking place on the streets of Lombok: the wedding party moves from the house of one partner to the other one in colourful costumes, with drums and music and dancing people.

In Teluk Kodek where our boats sleep, the pearls of Lombok can be admired and bought at the pearl farm. Temples can be visited in Narmada and Lingsar and in Batu Bolong which is just a few kilometres South of Senggigi beach. Lombok’s culture and traditions are rich and can be best observed with some local tour guides and with regard to Lombok’s festival calendar.

Ever dreamt of a natural neck massage?

Then we have good news: your dreams will come true. Explore the magic world of Lombok’s most pristine waterfalls in North and Central Lombok. The most famous ones are Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile in Senaru in the North of Lombok. At the southern foothills of the mount Rinjani you can find the highest waterfall of Lombok: Benang Stokel. The fresh and cool water for your natural neck massage comes directly from the Rinjani volcano.

Benang Kelambu in Central Lombok is the most stunning waterfall of Lombok with healing water flowing through a curtain of plants. The surroundings of the waterfalls with its mahogany forest, orchids, black macaque monkeys and trees full of coffee and cacao beans compensate for the challenging trek to the waterfalls. Enter this magical place on earth by yourself and take a dip in your own natural pool and shower.

The most popular place to stay on Lombok

The best place to stay is definitely around Senggigi town where you can also find our DSM Dive office and most of the hotels. Senggigi is a lively beach town with several restaurants on the streets and on the beach, some night life, travel agencies and a nice bay for swimming and relaxing.

Senggigi is the tourism center of Lombok along Lombok’s incredibly beautiful north-west coast. Fishermen are sailing from this coast in the early morning to bring you the freshest fish for your lunch and dinner. During the night time they look like hundreds of fireflies and in the morning you can admire them sailing offshore under their colourful triangular sails spread all over the wide ocean.

The best waves of Lombok or some even say of Indonesia

Indonesia's best waves for surfing be found in the South of Lombok in Kuta. Don’t mistake it for Kuta Bali. Kuta Lombok is calm and still natural with remote beaches and small homestays. Surfers come here for the waves and the chilled out lifestyle. Sun seekers and explorers can take advantage of this pristine and unspoilt area by cruising around by motorbike and finding "the beach"
