Would you recognize some of the underwater animals who like to hide and camouflage themselves during the day if they would come up during the night time? Sometimes those day-shy creatures stand out the most during the night time. This is one of the facts that makes the night dive so special.
What could be more exciting than getting in a boat at sunset and drive out towards the creaturesdark ocean? Feel like James Bond and jump into the black waters, only equipped with your scuba gear and a creaturesdark ocean torch. At night time you will see the scene around you with totally different eyes even when you scuba dived around a dive site before. The day-active marine life will go to sleep and the nocturnal organisms come up and will dance in the light of your torch.
If you are curious what is happening underwater during night time and if the fish really sleep with open eyes, come and do a night dive with DSM Dive Lombok and Gili Trawangan. You will become the star of your own James Bond movie.
Supported by the technique of the Fluo-Night-Dive, some of our night active underwater animals have the ability to glow in blue, orange, purple and other crazy colors.
If you light them up with special fluorescene light, they turn out to light back in neon colors. This comes from the proteins that many marine organisms produce that has the property to react to certain wavelengths of lights with a phenomenon called fluorescene.
In the case of marine life, the exciting light can have wavelengths in a wide range between (invisible) ultraviolet and (visible) blue. The wavelengths of the emitted light are usually blue, green, orange and red, depending on the specific protein the organism produces.
All night active animals like shrimps, crabs, worms, fish, jellyfish, clams, nudibranchs, cephalopods, tunicates, barnacles as well as the reefs, corals, sponges, anemone can light in fluorescene light during this glow-dive.
Fluorescene is the absorption of one wavelength of light (or color) and the re-emission of another totally different wavelength of light (or color). Under the Ultraviolet light a fluorescent object reveals its true colors. It absorbs the blue and re-emits a fluo color, transforming the blue into a bright glowing color that looks like neon.
The color in which the marine life is glowing back, depends on the specific protein the organism produces. In other words - Animals, plants and coral reefs that have fluorescence are able to convert one colour into a completely different one.
Explore by yourself in which color your favorite fish, shrimp or coral formation is glowing and what a fascinating play of colors the Fluo Night Dive is showing you in front of your eyes.
The basics of the Fluo Night Dive are the same as for a normal night dive. For the Fluorescence Night Dive we will give you a special lamp with some kind of UV-light and a special filter on your mask through which you can see the neon colors. Vision is more limited than normal during those dives, so you should have a good buoyancy, orientation under water and some experience in night-diving.
Before the Fluo Night Dive we will give you a proper briefing in our dive center in Gili Trawangan. In the briefing we will explain to you the procedure of the Fluoresecence Dive, what to consider while diving during the night time and about the physical processes of the Fluo-light. Our small group will get equiped with the special UV-torches and a special filter for your mask. Around sunset we take the boat to the divesite and start the glowing dive.
Explore how it feels to be in your own Avatar and James Bond movie and observe your favorite underwater species glowing in the dark with a Fluo Night Dive on Gili Trawangan.
