The long awaited moment has finally arrived!
In September, Samudra2 is ready! The DSM celebrates the event's newcomer, an outrigger robust and fast boat, holding a ceremonial animist. Proud to be diver, the team painted the boat with red flag and white diagonal! And yes, the DSM held its red carpet on the sea of Gili!
Samudra2, our second boat was build and adapted to best meet the needs of our divers. 2 meters longer and also wider, with 30 spaces reserved for tanks, the whole crew and divers can enjoy the boat ride to the dive site.
Sheltered from the sun or basking on the roof of the boat, divers share their impressions back to their dive: "So who saw the shark? "We saw how many turtles? 4 ... 5, I do not know! "...

DSM’s DIVE centre at Senggigi’s Puri Bunga hotel sits amid green forested hills above the beach and impresses visitors with its ocean vista and the happy people in its simple office. It’s one of two places from which DSM partners William Baillet from France, and Hadi Zulkarnain, who grew up with the sea in his blood at coastal Ampenan near Mataram, run their two-year-old dive business, which offers PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) courses and qualifications in the French language.
Hadi, who says spending his boyhood in and near the sea destined him for a diving career, and who is now among the most senior instructors in Lombok, has been a certificated PADI instructor for nine years. That’s long enough, he says, for him to know and understand the ins and outs of Lombok’s reef diving areas.
The marine parks in the island’s surrounding waters, right in his backyard, were his natural classroom long before any guides to diving were available in the Indonesian language.
“It really forced me to start everything from scratch and learn more things than new instructors do now,” says Hadi. “At first I was not a person who understood exactly what is so attractive to tourists on the seabed. But after spending almost half of my life with people who are very extraordinary, I’ve honed my instincts to present what they are looking for and have dreamed about.”
Discover Scuba Master (DSM) opened for business in April 2010. “Our dive centre is still relatively new here,” says Hadi.
“We started with a small office that only had 25 scuba diving sets, 50 oxygen tanks and two dive gear sets for children. But now, thanks to perseverance and spirit, hard work and our concept of good service, which for us means customer satisfaction is the number one priority, we have doubled our equipment inventory”
“We also have four new instructors who are able to communicate in different languages. They are friends and our friends are loyal and indeed already have experience of exploring many dive sites in the world. They are all officially licensed as professional PADI instructors.”
This year DSM was recognised for excellence and certified by PADI Asia Pacific as the first 5-star dive resort in Lombok offering PADI qualifications to French-speaking dive tourists.
Hadi says his concept of service, consistently emphasising customer satisfaction, has been in place as the company philosophy ever since William, his French partner, first expressed his intention to build a dive operation. “William fell in love with the beauty of Lombok’s natural environment and the Sasak culture the moment he arrived here,” he said.
“It did not take him long to decide to realise that dream. And when I had finished explaining about my concept of customer service, he gave me the thumbs-up sign and said, 'Yes, we'll do it.'”
Hadi says: “We keep to the principle that it is better to be early and have to wait ourselves, rather than to disappoint our customers with late service”.
“The smile of excitement on their faces is everything for us. And it’s not just about what we do for them under water. It’s also about how we arrange everything for them. We’ve never had any complaints. And to date our instructors have issued 500 certificates to student divers and have successfully demonstrated the wonders of the underwater world of Lombok to 10,000 fun-divers from around the world.”
DSM backs its customer service with package accommodation deals negotiated with several major hotels on Lombok. “We can offer many attractive packages that suit different budgets,” says Hadi.
